Technically two seperate tunes, but pasted together by LaMarcus' ARP synth. It was a case where the band were feeling ambitious and wanted to track something to rival early Pink Floyd psychedelia. Sure, it started there, but it wound up being something else altogether. Part 1: The Shadow features Nil and Nick grooving together and being joined by Brian on mandolin which then goes chaotic as the tune progresses to its' initial conclusion. Brian switches over to electric guitar for the second part, "The Echo." Like with CANDYGRAM and THEM FLIES, THE SHADOW & THE ECHO are purely improvised and this time... 80% live.
