I'd buy you a Cabriolet I'd buy you a Cabriolet I'd buy it today But I ain't gettin' paid You know, still I'd buy you a Cabriolet I'd send you rows o' roses I'd send you rows o' roses See to it you had 'em Right before it snows-iz I'd send you rows o' roses I'd build you a house on the hill I'd build you a house on the hill If the wind got too fright'nin' I'd keep you still You know, I'd build you a house on the hill I'd dig you a diamond mine I'd dig you a diamond mine Even though they don't shine Like that light in yer eyes I'd dig you a diamond mine I'd buy you a Cabriolet I'd buy you a Cabriolet I'd buy it today But I ain't gettin' paid I'd buy you a Cabriolet

about

My wife (before she was so) asked me way back in "the day" when I was getting started with my band, the Barnacles, if I'd buy her a VW Cabriolet after I got a record deal. I replied, "Sure, why not?"
A week later I was housesitting for a friend. One night while in this strange house, I was dreaming that I met Tom Waits and played him this song about buying a Cabriolet. He seemed pretty impressed. I woke up from the dream suddenly and rushed to my guitar in the living room and quickly worked out what I had done in my dream. The result was the song that appears on this single.

The Barnacles recorded it for our 2001 debut EP called WIRELESS. It was also a staple at our live shows, and even got to the point where people would shout out for us to play "Cabriolet." It was a great time to be a songwriter. The ultimate compliment was hearing that one of my fans made it their wedding song.

For about 12 years the song went dormant. I had stuffed in my "cellar", so to speak. Lately, as I haven't had a lot of time to sit and write new music, I decided to give a listen to the Barnacles songbook and thought it might be nice to shed some new light on these old songs. So, here's a new version of an old song. I hope you enjoy it.

Also included is a "bar room" version with some less than graceful lyrics. By the time of this performance (October 2007), the Barnacles were almost done, and the song was becoming too routine. So, I injected some sophomoric humor. The jokes may not land with audiences outside of the United States, especially the lines about White Castle. I also think the lines "dress up in drag" are not appreciated in 2021, so if I hurt anyone's feelings, that isn't the intention. Don't cancel me. Well... do cancel me. That will give me more attention and then I will win :-)
