"Maiden Name", like "Looking Glass", didn't end up the way it started. Casey and I wrote this very thoughtful tale of a man looking back on a powerful previous relationship from years earlier. It was originally put to a folky, acoustic guitar and mandolin backdrop.

I had the acoustic tracks all set and was waiting for Casey to do his parts. Then I got hit with Covid and found myself unable to sing. I still wanted to work on something though, even if I was laying in bed feeling like I had a small oven in my lungs. So, for laughs I got to messing with the drum programming on "Maiden Name" and went crazy with it. That session got me through the night.

Later, when Casey was in to record his parts for the song, and I had muted the drum programming; assuming it wouldn't actually be used, he commented how the song dragged. For giggles I switched the drum machine part back on and we both agreed, it should stay. It carried the song to a new territory. It went even higher once Nick's bass got added. The bass he provided wound up being the heartbeat of the song.
