COEUR D'LACI MAE stands alone as a unique rock arrangement mixed with military call & answer verses. Inspired by the basic training cadences, Brian envisioned what he called "military doo-wop". In the end when he, Nick, and Nil united to record, the tune became military garage rock (as much of it was recorded in a garage). Some of the lyrics run counter to where our world is culturally, but this is present to show the absence of mind that the protagonist in the song is experiencing.
