about

Released as a short-run cassette single. This song is really special right now as this fall it will celebrate its' 25th anniversary. The lyrics were written by Katie Benoit, and the music by Katie and Brian. It was the first song Brian ever professionally recorded. Ed Calvey sat behind the engineering desk with Lance Dejong, Brian sang and played guitar, and Casey Wollberg provided harmony. Recorded in the summer of 1996 and released that November.

Per Katie:
I think the storytelling aspect of Ellen Defoe is what makes it interesting. It doesn't give a complete story, though, leaving much to the listener's imagination.

Part of me likes to wonder what the trees, the rivers, the Earth thinks about the humans co-existing with it. If a tree could mourn a human life, what would that be like?

I still think it's probably the best set of lyrics I've written. I'm glad that the song is still around to entertain and mystify future generations of listeners.
